Christmas party review

Hiya guys, thank you so much to everyone who came to the Christmas party on Friday night and made it a brilliant end of year party. First, I'd like to thank Suzanne Holding for helping blow up balloons, also Steven Ireland, Jim Boran and Kevin Roddy for helping put decorations up. A big thank you to Michelle and Bonz for entertaining us all, as well as Mike Harding who accompanied Michelle and Bonz, playing Harmonica and Mandolin. Mike also joined regular sing/musician Steve Woolley. The evening began with our very own resident singer, the lovely Ian Sproson, who got things off to a flying start. It was also nice to see John Billock again, John was a regular singer/songwriter/musician the first time the folk club was at the Cleveland Hotel, he was a very young man then! A new regular to our club is musician, Steven Ireland, Steven recently moved to the area, he plays a number of instruments and played Accordion on Friday, with Irish jigs and Russian folk, Steven is currently building 'A One-man band' and hopes to have it completed in the new year.

After Steven's superb performance, our guests of the night Michelle and Bonz played well known songs from their vast repertoire. After a short break, Des Basterfield performed, Des was a recent guest but is becoming a regular to add a bit of variety and anarchy to the mix, I've still not seen these silver shoes! The night played well over time but was well worth it, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank those who have supported the club as Singer's, Musician's or Club Member's and people behind the scenes, doing posters, accounts and publicity, they know who they are and without their help the club would not run as smoothly as it does. So, until January 11th 2013 I'd like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and let's hope that the club continues to grow. A small foot note I'd like to mention, on Friday, singer/songwriter/musician Alan Taylor came to the club, but due to injury was unable to play, I understand Alan is going in for surgery very soon, our thoughts and prayers are with him and the hope for a speedy recovery so next time Alan comes to the club, he too can perform. luv and best wishes L xx

club update

Hi gang, the freezing weathers gone so Manchester's back to normal . . . cold, wet and windy. One thing's for sure, the heating's on in the upstairs room and Petra's even putting the bar on upstairs. Crackers, poppers and a fantastic guest, Michelle Holding, and much more . . . what more can a Christmas party ask for? So instead of staying at home, watching boring TV, come and join us at the club, let's make it an end of the year party to remember! Be there or be talked about, Luv Lorna xx

Friday Night Review

Hiya gang, well, for a singer's night what a really good night we had. We had three new artists come to the club, Steven Ireland has recently move to Crumpsall and will fit in very well with the club, he played Accordion, playing Gypsy style and Russian folk music. Steven informed me he also plays mandolin and is working towards building a one-man band busker. He has the parts he's just got to put it all together, lol! This will take a few months and I'll keep you posted. Steven also brought a friend, Paul, who entertained us by asking for topical subjects, he would then put music and lyrics to it, which was quite good fun. There was also, Harry, who kept very quiet till the second half, but then dedicated 'I Love my Dog' to Corky, Ian's guide dog - who has also become our mascot. He also did his version of 'Winter's Tale' by David Essex, and 'Streets of London' by Ralf McTel, it really was up there as one of the best singer's night. This Friday the 14th will be the last club night of the year, so we are having our Christmas Party with special guest the fantastic, Michelle Holding and Bonz. Last time Michelle was here it was a brilliant night, enjoyed by everyone, there are also a few surprise guests and you never know, I too may sing, lol! It would be good to see you, so we can end 2012 with a musical bang, see you Friday starts 20:30 prompt until 23:30 luv L xx

P.S.
Anybody wishing to sing or play on the night, must contact me by phone no later than Thursday.

club update

Hiya gang, just a short note to tell you this Friday the 7th Dec is a singer's musician's and poet's night, so anyone can come along to perform. Also slight change, next Friday the 14th Dec we are having the club Christmas Party, with special guest Michelle Holding and Bonz. We also have some members from Poulton-Le-Fyldes folk club, who are coming along to perform, I'm sure there will be plenty of song and Christmas cheer. So join in the spirit of Christmas and come along to the club. The club will be closed until Jan 11th which opens with a guest night, our guest is local singer/songwriter, Stuart Warburton from Bury. Hope to see you this Friday or for the party on the 14th, luv Lxx

Friday Night Review

Hi gang, sorry for the late review, computers and modern technology. . . enough said. "Hangover fading but whew! What a night. What can be said about Roydan that hasn't been said before. Not only does he do what it says on the tin, but one hell of a lot more. It was a roller coaster night careered along without loosing momentum. Many different styles and guest performers just added, added and added soooo much to the night. Hope one of us can get the pics/vids up on this site cos Roydan and his friends deserve all the success that we can throw at them. Here's to the next time hopefully soon! Just remember it's Roydan Styles. . . and Co. cos everyone in the band is a star too!" - Ian Sproson.

Well what can I say that Ian hasn't already said, although I can tell you the musicians names. We started the night with resident singer, Ian Sproson before I, myself took a backseat for one night as the incredibly talented Roydan Styles took over the night and played an excellent Master of Ceremonies, although I know he has got years of experience. Roydan's wife, Nicky Chaplin was on lead vocals and electric double base, we also had, Jonny Hulme on five string banjo. Anthony Scruton was on percussion, Bas 'Sax' Collingwood on Saxophone, and together they were an excellent alliance of superb talents. Another lady that came with Roydan, Kate Thomson, sang and played guitar, we also had an extra visit from the brilliant Des Basterfield minus silver shoes, lol, over all it was absolutely amazing night.

We've made a minor change to the club calendar, instead of finishing on the 7th of Dec, we've added an extra night so on Friday the 14th it will be the club Christmas party, with special guests: Michelle Holding accompanied by Bonz. So that's something that looks to be another brilliant night, if her last appearance is anything to go by. We are then closed and reopen on Jan the 11th, with a guest night, our guest is Stuart Warburton. So I hope to see you on the 7th if not hopefully on the 14th for the Christmas party, I'm sure there will be a few more surprises. Luv Lxx

club update

Hi guys, hope all are well. Sorry for the lack of updates, but my PC died on me last week, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did!! Anyway back to important things, this Friday 23rd is a club night, our guest this week is the fabulous Roydan Styles! Roydan was a guest last year and was renown for playing 'Wonderwall' with Barry playing Didgeridoo on Karen Galston's show at North Manchester Community Radio, brilliantly funny. Roydan performed with his wife Nicky, Nicky played an electric double bass whilst 7 months pregnant, it really was a brilliant night. Roydan describes his music as a mixture of 'self-penned bluegrass' and folk music (mainly upbeat) with some blues edge. Roydan is also bringing some friends with him, Jonny Hulme playing banjo and, Anthony 'Bongo' Fury on percussion's so I'm sure we're in for a good night, hope to see you there, love L xx

Friday Night Review

Hiya gang, in the words of Ian Sproson ''
Whew! What a night got a hangover to prove it, but by ell it was worth it. Des Basterfield was superb as expected. I love his battered old suitcase as a base thump! Also a superb accordian player who took us all to Ireland and Russia in seconds Steve deffo for a booking for me. Steve Woolly was in good form too and everyone I'm sure had a wonderful night. Hope the vids come out and can be posted for us all to share. Friday Night Review

Hiya gang, thank you to everyone who came on Friday, what an absolutely brilliant night! Ian 'Sproggy' Sproson got the night off to a fine start as usual, he amazes me just how extensive his repertoire is! lol Steve, Carolanne and a friend who came with them Barry, didn't fail to impress. Steve sang a lot of his well known stuff that everyone could join in with, he then asked Ian to sing 'Mon like thee'  Steve played guitar and joined in chorus which was really nice, so when I manage to edit the recording of the night, I'll put it on the guest video feature. Carolanne has an amazing voice range singing and playing songs from Joni Mitchell to Crosby Stills and Nash. We were also lucky to get a visit from Des Basterfield which was a nice surprise so he sang a few songs Des plays with a band called 'Flat Cap Three' and is a guest at the club on 21st October so it really was a good night, so much so we didn't notice we ran 30 minutes over time oops! The next club night is on October 12th which is a singer's musician's and poet's night hope to see you all again luv Lxx

Friday Night Review & Update

Hiya gang, thank you to everyone who made it on Friday, it's great to have Sproggy and guide dog Corky there, the only dog with a folk club sat nav!! According to Ian, when they get off at the Metro station in Crumpsall, Corky knows exactly where he's going and  Ian is literally brought to the folk club, he's then deserted at the bar and Corky comes up the stairs to the club ha ha well trained dog !! It was lovely to have Stuart Thompson join us, he and Steve Woolley make a brilliant duo. We also had the talented Keelan sisters, Fran played some of her own songs,  plus Alex read some of her own poems they were both really good, so we're looking forward to them coming back again. We were very lucky to have the lovely Sue Thornton singing more traditional songs for us, so on the whole a very good night. The club is closed now due to summer holidays, we will be open again on 17th August. So until then enjoy the sun, the Olympics and probably loads of BBQ's!! Keep well and I'll see you all next time luv Lxx

Friday Night Review

Hiya gang, well what a shame the weather was so horrendous on Friday, I hope everyone managed to survive unscathed. It  was a big shame but thanks to those who did brave the rain, I've pointed out recently we've had some amazingly talented people coming to the club, last week was no exception, we had the superb Stuart Warburton. Stuart is a local singer songwriter from Bury and has been around the world playing his music, he only played a few of his songs, but he truly was excellent and I hope we can have him at the club in the future on a guest night, watch this space so you don't miss him.!! A big thank you too to Ian Sproson, Steve Woolley and Stuart Thompson for providing a much needed distraction from dreary weather, I hope Steve and Stuart had a good time at the Droylsdem Folk Weekend also thank you to Kevin for helping with the practical side of the club, it really is appreciated.  Next club night is 6th July and is a guest night, our guest is the fabulous Mike Bowden it'll always an entertaining night with Mike, looking forward to having him back to his roots!! Friday Night Review

Hiya gang, firstly my apologies for review being late, secondly, a short update on Ian 'Sproggy' Sproson, Ian's away on holiday in Russia!! yeah I was surprised too, but he ended up singing with Morris troupe & playing their big base drum?? I'm sure we'll get the full story when he's home. On Friday I was surprised that there wasn't more people to see Claire, although on a positive side those who had battled the bad weather were a really good bunch, also such an array of excellent talent. The night began with our 'temporary resident singer' the wonderful, Keep The Change Bob, who very kindly stood in for Sproggy and got the evening off to a good start. I've always tried to encourage diversity at the club, so I was really pleased when Alex Keelan, new to the club and a friend of Claire's got up and read poetry she had written, which was really good, followed by her sister Fran, who played and sang one of her own songs, excellent talent obviously runs in the family. Claire had asked that I let people perform in the first half of the evening then she would do complete second half, an odd way of doing things  I know, but it did work out well.  Michael Burns previously from Northumbria sang a couple of traditional style songs, then David Gordon and finally Steve Whoolley, time for a break me thinks!!

Claire opened the second part of the night with well known songs including Ordinary Rebel, The Fleece song, Enough is Enough and more. For Claire's final song at the end of the night, Claire gave out 'shaking ffruits' as percussion instruments and Dick 'Weymouth' one of our regular members now, was talked into  playing a slide whistle next to her and other audience member joined in from their seated places Michael Burns played Mandolin, Keep The Change Bob on guitar, and Di Williams on the tin whistle then all joined in for a big finish. I hope I can try to put a recording of that on the blogpage. What a finish!! hope to see you all next time, luv Lxx

07/06/2012

Club Update

Hiya gang, hope everyone is well, just a short note to tell you tomorrow night, 8th June is a guest night. Our guest this week is renowned singer songwriter Claire Mooney, Claire has been a supporter of the club since we reopened,  but this is the first time we have had a guest night solely for her. Claire is well known for her superb ability to write songs from protest songs to love songs and thought provoking lyrics, as well as being an excellent singer and musician, Claire also runs creative workshops and really is multi talented !! I think you'll be in for a treat if you haven't seen Claire before and if you have you'll know. If you click on the Guest Video Link you can see a preview of two of Claire's songs. well worth seeing I suggest you get there early to make sure you get a seat club tarts at 8.30pm look forward to seeing you there luv Lxx

Friday Night Review

Hiya gang, I was sorry to hear a few of our regular members were unable to make it on Friday due to other plans that were unavoidable, we did miss you and hope to see you back next time. The night started off quite slow really, the weather didn't help either, so we were using brute force to open windows lol, we even managed to open the door to the veranda, which hasn't been opened to my knowledge for the last year or so!! With the room a bit cooler Ian Sproson got us off to a good start, we were also lucky to have two new artists to the club. Chris Rogan joined us and sang a beautiful song 'Set My Dreams Free' which he had written, plus others, a really talented singer songwriter, but I'm sure he has already been told that many times before. Steve Woolly came with one of my favourite musicians, the lovely Stuart Thompson and in no time they were all joining in with each other,  playing well known songs turning it into more of  a jamming session!  Another friend of Steve's Dave Hammond, came in late on in the evening and although he said he was a bit rusty he played and sang really well, plus as he didn't know the club was there, I'm sure he will be back again. Everyone seemed to be having such a good time, it was hard to get them to finish  We have had a good friend of  Mike Bowden's,  Dick (not Richard)  or 'Weymouth'  who has started coming to the club more regularly, and has restarted an old harmonious refrain we had many moons ago at the Cleveland at the end of the night, 'pass your glasses to the bar''!!  or 'Me Dad's Drunk Again'  which was always requested from Ian Sproson !! where did I leave my Tardis?? lol.  The next club night is June 8th with the brilliant Claire Mooney, not to be missed.  Until then enjoy the sunny weather luv Lxx

24/05/2012

Friday night review

Hiya gang, firstly I glad to report, our resident singer Ian Sproson is feeling alot better and will be fighting fit for next folk night. Sproggy was really missed on Friday,  but the extremely entertaining Keep the change Bob  very kindly stood in for Ian to start off the night .Our guest was the superb and exceptionally talented Alun Parry, Alun wasted no time getting us joining in with all well known favourite's including 'The Dirty Thirty', 'Go to work on Monday' and two of my favourites 'If Harry don't go' and 'Waiting for the lovers' and more. It was nice to have an old friend of the Cleveland folk club from the first time around Walter Brown, Walter sang a beautiful song, 'A thousand miles away' about  a soldier in the armed forces, also 'Accrington station gates'. We also had our regular poet extraordinaire Simon Rusty, who  delighted us with parts of his repertoire including ' A brief hysterical rhyme by Prof  Stephen Hawkins' Simon has a book out with a collection of his poetry 'the Satical Verses'  by Simon Rusty,  please make sure you get the right one!! With a few songs from  regular club member Steve Woolly,  then  Alun finished the night with the folk version of  Nickleback's 'rockstar' 'I wanna be a folkstar' (check out facebook page for the club or youtube to hear this and some of Alun's performances)  and 'Oh Mr Cameron' which was partly written by Alun's mum!! On the whole a good night was had by all. With even more new faces that didn't know about the  club, who really enjoyed themselves, it's beginning to feel like it used to be. The next club night is 25th May, a singers and musicians night look forward to hopefully seeing you there luv Lxx

Alun is definitely well worth making the effort to see,  I'm sure he won't disappoint hope to see you there  luv Lxx

Friday night review

Hiya gang, Fridays  just keep getting better, in the words of Ian Sproson "What a night you all missed! Should have been there to hear some fantastic music with 2 lads we haven't seen before but Lorna should book em sharpish!!!" I couldn't have put it better myself lol ! Those "lads" are better known  as Dave Mather's and Pete Robinson from Salford City radio (94.4 FM every Thursday 6pm to 7pm). Dave and Pete performed a number songs ranging from Eric Boyle's song to Jake Thackeray including songs they had written I have to say it really was an excellent night and I'm sure like other singers and musicians that have come to the club, they will come back If you would like to see Dave and Pete performing, they are at The Wagon and Horses Salford alternate Thursdays, but check before you go. The next club night is May 11th, our guest is the fantastic singer songwriter Alun Parry from Liverpool, Alun is definitely well worth seeing he really  is a superb songwriter and performer, I know you won't be disappointed. Hope to see you there luv Lxx

Friday night review

Hiya gang, what a brilliant night last Friday was, Michelle Holding and friend Bonz was our guest, it was nice to have a lot of new faces as well as the regular ones. The evening began with our wonderful resident singer, Ian Sproson, who got everybody in singing mood with his new song and others from his wide repertoire, then the evening got better and better. On the evenings Michelle and Bonz had come down to the club, I was ill and had missed them, so I was very happy I'd taken the word of our members and we had booked them. Michelle and Bonz lived up to their reputation, brilliant songs, melodic harmonies and cheeky banter, kept us entertained all evening. We were also in for a treat with an unexpected performance from the superb, Pete Ryder, who performed his excellent version of 'Nat Shapiro's time',  plus regular Steve Whoolley did duets with Bonz, on the whole a good time was had by all, an absolutely excellent evening. The next club night is April 27th which is a singers and musicians night,  that also included poets too. Anyone is welcome to come and perform at the club, hopefully see you there next time luv Lxx
